Don’t think of Kilner jars just for preserves, jams or pickles. If you’re looking for something stylish to store ribbons, threads, buttons, safety pins or needlecrafts bits n bobs, this could be ideal. Your pin cushion jar would also make a great present!
A good tip is to use lightweight cotton or poly/cotton mix fabric, if the fabric is too thick your lid will not screw down. Be adventurous with fabric colours to add vibrancy to your space.
This is a quick and easy project to do in about half an hour!
What you’ll need:
Kilner jars (come in various sizes)
Scrap fabric
Tape measure
Iron on interfacing
Scissors
Wadding (cotton wool balls work just as well)
Strong Glue/Glue gun
Curved Needle and Thread (optional)
[Remove the lid from the jar and separate the flat lid from the screw lid.

Using the flat lid, place it on your fabric and cut a round circle approx 5cms (2”) larger than lid.

Cut the interfacing the same size as the lid. This is used to re-enforce the fabric for use as pin cushion. Iron to wrong side of the centre of the fabric.

Make a sandwich by placing the fabric wrong side up, pop wadding in the centre and top with the lid.

Push your sandwich through the screw lid and trim off any excess fabric. This will help your fabric lay flat and enable the lid to close fully. At this point you can just use a strong glue or glue gun to secure the fabric in place or using a curved needle you can stitch in place (criss cross from side to side/up and down – pull together so the fabric is taut).
Cut out a circle of fabric (or card) smaller than the lid, this is just to neaten the inside of the lid. Glue in place and your cute pincushion/storage jar is done, ready to be filled with your sewing essentials
